In Europe one of the powerhouse teams of the 1960s was Alan Mann Racing. With the full support of Ford Europe, the team dominated the British and European Touring Car Championships among others. For this reason, Ford supplied the team with two of the astonishing new GT40 MkIIs to contest the 1966 Le Mans. The number 8 car was modified with some highly experimental light weight parts and given over to Sir John Whitmore and Frank Gardner. They put their car on the grid in 3rd for the start and were full of confidence. And though they started out well the clutch failed only 31 laps into the race and they were forced to retire.
