In 1977, BMW focused on a Group 5 successor to follow on from the 320i road-going production model that was introduced two years earlier: The new type 320. This touring car was fitted with a 300 hp water-cooled in-line four-cylinder engine with a cubic capacity of 2.0 litres. This engine was developed especially for Formula 2 racing. The car weighed-in at just under 800 kg and sported extremely wide wheel arch extensions, a huge front apron and a meaty rear spoiler to improve the aerodynamics and give the car a stunning aggressive appearance. The successful career of Englishman David Hobbs has gone from winning Trans-Am and Formula 5000 Championships to television commentator on the Speed Channel. His versatility behind the wheel has ranged Formula 1 to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. But most of his long racing career has been concentrated in the United States where he has found the most success. Driving this factory sponsored BMW 320i is a prime example. In 3 seasons of IMSA competition, David Hobbs won 9 races against stiff competition. Today he owns a successful car dealership and he does the color commentary for Formula One races.
